If you’re suddenly only getting freezing cold water when you turn on your shower, then the first thing you should do is check your water heater. If it’s a gas one, and your water heater is on the older side, you may need to relight the pilot light. If this is the case for you and you’re not sure how to go about it, don’t worry! Your team at Bellbrook Plumbing & Drain has put together a few easy steps to follow. With our help, you’ll have warm water again in no time!

WHAT TOOLS SHOULD YOU GATHER BEFORE RELIGHTING YOUR WATER HEATER’S PILOT LIGHT?

  • Flashlight
  • Lighter (long-reaching lighters are best)

WHERE IS THE PILOT LIGHT FOR THE WATER HEATER?

Typically, the pilot light is positioned below the gas valve. However, in some water heater models, a small panel or faceplate may cover the pilot light opening. So, if your water heater has one, carefully remove it and set it to the side for the time being. This step might require you to use a flashlight so that you can see more easily and have access to the area.

IS IT NECESSARY TO TURN OFF THE GAS BEFORE RELIGHTING YOUR WATER HEATER?

Yes, always turn the gas valve off whenever you are working with gas-powered equipment. It’s crucial for safety reasons. Also, after you shut off the gas, give it at least five minutes to dissipate before relighting your water heater pilot light. This step is key and shouldn’t be skipped because if you do, it could result in severe damage to your home and harm to those inside of it.

WHAT IS THE STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS FOR RELIGHTING MY GAS WATER HEATER?

  1. After five minutes have passed by, turn the setting on the pilot light assembly to “pilot” so it provides a small amount of gas for the pilot flame to be relit.
  1. Then press the turn the knob to “reset,” pressing it inward. On some models, you may have to press down on the knob. Be mindful to keep your hand pressed down on this button. Don’t let it go just yet.
  1. Now light the pilot light by holding down the “reset” button and simultaneously using an ignited lighter in your other hand to reignite the pilot flame. Be cautious when doing this. The flame should catch when you are close enough to the burner and continue to remain ablaze. You can finally let go of the “reset” switch when the flame lights up.
  1. Observe the pilot flame for a minute to make sure it remains lit. The flame should have a blue hue and be burning steadily.
  1. After the pilot light ignites, don’t forget to turn the gas back on.
  1. Replace the pilot light access panel after you’re finished.

Give us a call if you’re still having issues with your water heater’s pilot light after trying these steps. It’s possible there’s an issue with a component if you are still having trouble. We would be happy to help identify and resolve the problem.
